Humane AI Pin

Humane raised $241M on an ex-Apple founding team's 'future without smartphones' thesis, shipped a $699 device with catastrophic launch reviews, and sold its remaining software and IP to HP for $116M in February 2025 — device end-of-lifed in weeks.

§01The pitch

A laser-projector lapel pin running a proprietary 'Cosmos' AI OS — the post-smartphone device, no apps, no screen, voice-and-gesture-driven, $699 plus a $24/mo plan.

30-second summary

Humane shipped the AI Pin in April 2024 after six years of capital-intensive development. Launch reviews from MKBHD ("the worst product I've ever reviewed"), The Verge, and Wired identified battery, heat, LLM latency, and feature overlap with smartphone assistants as structural failures. A May 2024 safety recall of the charging case compounded the brand damage. HP acquired Humane's software platform, AI models, and engineering team for $116M in February 2025; the Pin was declared obsolete within weeks, with cloud services wound down and existing devices effectively bricked for their voice-AI features.

The Pitch

"A new way to interact with AI." The early Wayback captures (2018-2021) kept the company deliberately opaque — a patent-heavy stealth shop run by Imran Chaudhri (ex-Apple human-interface lead) and Bethany Bongiorno (ex-Apple iOS software engineering director). The 2024 captures position the Pin as the post-smartphone device: voice-and-gesture, no-screen-except-laser-projection, always-listening, subscription-required (T-Mobile MVNO + Humane cloud). The pitch bundled three bets: (1) ambient computing replaces pocket-screen computing, (2) LLMs make a no-app interface viable, (3) consumers will pay $699 + $24/mo for a screenless companion device.

Five Causes of Death

Market

The market for a wearable AI companion device is real in principle and may yet be real in practice — but the wedge "replace your smartphone" asks the consumer to abandon an appliance they use 150+ times per day for one that costs almost as much with dramatically less capability. The addressable market for "$700+ status-signaling ambient-AI device" in 2024 was a few tens of thousands of tech-enthusiast buyers, not the mass-consumer thesis Humane's capital structure required. The category-creating pitch ("post-smartphone") was incompatible with the reality of the 2024 installed base.

Product

The Pin shipped with widely documented failures: battery life under four hours of active use; heat throttling that disabled the device for minutes at a time; laser projector unreadable in daylight; voice-command round-trip latency of 3-8 seconds against a sub-second smartphone baseline; a feature set (photos, translation, note-taking, music) that Apple Watch and AirPods Pro already shipped with better latency and no extra monthly fee. The "CosmOS" operating system was a thin wrapper over GPT-4 and a Google-based backend, not the autonomous agent operating system the pitch implied.

Team

The founding team's Apple pedigree was the pitch's social proof and also its structural limit. The Apple product-development culture optimizes for category-defining first versions shipped with mass distribution; Humane tried to apply that playbook without Apple's retail, without iPhone-scale component supply, and without the software-platform ecosystem that makes Apple's hardware vertically integrated. The company scaled to 200+ employees before shipping a single unit — the Apple ratio applied to a 200-unit-per-week seed market produced a fatal headcount overhang.
